Power supply ratings, explained without the marketing

The 80 PLUS tiers — Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Titanium — certify efficiency, meaning how much of the power drawn from the wall reaches the components rather than becoming heat. They do not certify build quality, ripple suppression or how long the unit will last, which is what actually decides whether a supply protects the hardware attached to it.

Efficiency is measured at several load points, and the differences between adjacent tiers are small in absolute terms. A Gold unit at 50 per cent load might be 90 per cent efficient against a Bronze unit at 85 per cent. On a 400 W draw that is roughly 25 W of additional heat, which affects fan noise and case temperature more than an electricity bill.

Wattage should be chosen with headroom rather than to the calculated maximum. Supplies are quietest and most efficient somewhere near half load, and transient spikes from modern graphics cards can briefly exceed their rated draw by a wide margin. A unit sized to the exact calculated total will spend its life at the top of its range.

Single-rail and multi-rail describes how the 12 V output is divided. Multi-rail splits it across independently limited circuits, which is a safety behaviour: a fault on one rail trips that rail rather than the whole supply. Single-rail makes the full 12 V capacity available anywhere, which is simpler to plan around for a high-draw graphics card.

Modular cabling is a build convenience, not an electrical one. It matters for airflow and for how a small case can be assembled, and semi-modular units are usually the sensible compromise — the motherboard and CPU cables are always needed anyway.
