IPS, VA or OLED: choosing a monitor panel
Refresh rate gets the headline, but panel type decides what a screen is actually good at. The trade-offs, and which ones matter for work rather than games.

A monitor specification usually leads with size, resolution and refresh rate, because those are easy to compare. Panel type is buried further down and determines more: how colours hold at an angle, how deep black looks, and how fast the pixels change.
IPS panels hold colour and contrast when viewed off-centre, which is why they dominate design and office work. Their weakness is black level — an IPS screen showing black in a dark room glows faintly grey, sometimes unevenly toward the edges. Modern IPS panels reach high refresh rates, so the old assumption that IPS means slow no longer holds.
VA panels invert those trade-offs. Contrast is markedly better, so black is genuinely dark and text on a dark background looks cleaner. Colour shifts more as you move off-axis, and the slower pixel transitions can smear in dark scenes. For a single user sitting centrally, particularly on a curved ultrawide, VA is often the better value.
OLED has no backlight at all, so each pixel switches off completely. Contrast and response time are in a different class. The considerations are burn-in from static interface elements over years of use, and lower full-screen brightness than an equivalent LCD — which matters in a bright room more than most reviews suggest.
For a spreadsheet and browser day, the resolution and the physical size of the panel will affect you far more than which of the three you pick. Text clarity is a function of pixel density: a 27-inch screen at 1440p and a 32-inch at 4K land in a comfortable range, while a 32-inch at 1440p will look coarse at a normal desk distance.
